The 2026 League of Legends World Championship kicked off its Play-In Stage on home soil in the United States, and day one delivered an instant classic. According to reports from the opening day, Karmine Corp survived a scare to move through the upper bracket, while Vietnam's MVK Esports pulled off a statement 3-0 sweep over Brazil's FURIA that nobody in the analyst desk had predicted.

MVK Esports' upset over FURIA was the story of the day. FURIA looked poised to take the opening game, but a series of costly mistakes let MVK turn the series around. Vietnam's squad then punished FURIA's uncoordinated plays in Game 2 before completely dismantling their Brazilian opponents in Game 3, with Võ "Chika" Lê Nhân and Lương Hải "Gury" Long earning standout mentions for their performances.

## Bracket math and what's next The four Play-In teams are fighting for a single spot in the Swiss Stage, so every series carries real stakes. MVK advance to face Karmine Corp in the upper bracket, with the winner moving to the final round of the Play-Ins. FURIA drop to the lower bracket, where they face Cloud9 KIA in a do-or-die elimination series — the loser becomes the first team eliminated from Worlds 2026.

The loser of the Karmine Corp versus MVK clash is not done either: that team drops to face the survivor of the Cloud9 KIA and FURIA elimination match for one last chance at qualification. The final Play-In qualifier will then advance to the Swiss Stage, which begins on October 23 in Allen, Texas.

Underdogs have always had a special place at Worlds, and a Vietnamese team crashing through the favorites' bracket is exactly the kind of narrative that builds viewer momentum heading into the main event. With only one qualification spot available, every game from here on is effectively a decider.

Day two continues on Friday with Karmine Corp taking on MVK Esports for the upper bracket prize, and Cloud9 KIA battling FURIA to stay alive. For a tournament whose Play-In stage is sometimes treated as a formality, Worlds 2026 opened with a genuine warning to the favorites — nobody is safe this year.
