Xbox Game Pass used to be the easiest recommendation in gaming. For a low monthly price, you got hundreds of games, including new releases on day one. Then the price changed, twice. In October 2025, Microsoft renamed the tiers and raised Ultimate to $29.99 a month, a 50 percent jump. In April 2026, it partially reversed the increase, cutting Ultimate back to $22.99 a month and PC Game Pass to $13.99. With prices moving that much in a single year, the question is worth asking again: is Game Pass still worth it in 2026? The answer depends on which tier you buy and how you play.

As of late 2026, Game Pass has four tiers. Essential costs $9.99 a month and gives you online console multiplayer plus a small selection of games, but no access to the full game catalog. Premium costs $14.99 a month and gives you a catalog of more than 200 games on console and PC, though new Xbox-published games arrive about a year after launch rather than on day one. PC Game Pass costs $13.99 a month and gives you more than 300 PC games, including day-one first-party releases and EA Play. Ultimate costs $22.99 a month and gives you everything: more than 500 games across console and PC, day-one releases, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft Plus Classics, and cloud gaming.

Two changes in 2026 matter as much as the prices. First, future Call of Duty games will no longer launch on Ultimate or PC Game Pass on day one. They will arrive about a year later instead, which removes one of the biggest day-one draws for many players. Second, cloud gaming now comes with a monthly cap: 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 hours for Premium, and 5 hours for Essential. If you play mostly through the cloud, those caps are a real limit. Check the current terms before you subscribe, because Microsoft has changed them more than once in the past year.

The simplest way to judge Game Pass is break-even math. Take the annual cost of the tier and divide it by what you would have paid for the games you actually play from it. Ultimate at $22.99 a month costs about $276 a year. If new games cost around $70 each, you break even by playing four games a year from the catalog that you would otherwise have bought. PC Game Pass at $13.99 a month costs about $168 a year, so you break even at two or three games. Premium at $14.99 a month costs about $180 a year, and Essential at $9.99 costs about $120 a year, mostly for the online multiplayer rather than the games.

The key is the games you would otherwise have bought. If you play two or three new games a year and mostly replay old favourites, Game Pass will cost you more than buying those games outright. If you try many different games, play new releases regularly, or use the service to discover games you would never have bought, the value is much better. Count only the games you actually play, not the size of the catalog. A library of 500 games you never open is worth nothing, while three games you love can justify the whole subscription.

Ultimate is worth it if you play across console and PC, you use cloud gaming regularly, you play three or more day-one releases a year, or you actively use the bundled EA Play, Fortnite Crew, and Ubisoft Plus Classics. For that player, the bundled services alone are worth a large part of the price, and the game library is a bonus. PC Game Pass is the best value for PC-only players, because it gives you day-one releases and EA Play for $13.99, which is cheaper than Ultimate and includes the games most PC players actually want.

Premium is worth it if you play on console, you do not care about day-one releases, and you want a large catalog to browse for $14.99. Essential is worth it mainly for the online multiplayer, and only if you play online console games regularly. Skip Game Pass entirely if you play one or two games a year, you mostly play free-to-play titles, or you prefer owning your games permanently. The subscription model only saves you money if you play enough different games to beat the break-even point, and for a focused player who buys two games a year, buying them outright is still cheaper.

Game Pass is worth it in 2026 if you play enough different games to beat the break-even point. PC Game Pass at $13.99 is the best value for PC players, Premium at $14.99 suits console players who do not need day-one releases, and Ultimate at $22.99 only makes sense if you use the console, PC, cloud, and bundled services together.
