How to Increase FPS on a Low-End PC for Fortnite
⚡ Executive Brief & Key Takeaways
  • Primary Signal: How to Increase FPS on a Low-End PC for Fortnite
  • Overview: Fortnite can run smoothly on modest hardware if you tune it right. These settings, in order of impact, lift frame rates without making the game unplayable....
  • Verification: Analyzed and compiled by GameVault 668 editorial monitoring desk.

Fortnite is designed to run on a wide range of hardware, but default settings assume a stronger PC than many players actually own. If your frame rate stutters during fights or drops in busy areas, the fix is rarely a new graphics card. A sequence of in-game settings, Windows tweaks, and driver updates can often double your frame rate on the same machine.

The single biggest gain comes from switching Fortnite's rendering mode to Performance Mode in the video settings. This mode sacrifices some visual detail for a large frame rate boost and is the mode competitive players use even on strong PCs. After enabling it, set the 3D resolution to around 80 to 90 percent and cap the frame rate slightly above your monitor's refresh rate to avoid wasted effort.

Shadows and effects are the biggest frame rate killers: set shadows to off, effects to low, and post-processing to low. View distance matters for spotting enemies, so keep it at medium or higher if you can, and keep textures at medium, since low textures can make distant players harder to see. Anti-aliasing can stay off at 1080p without much visual loss.

Close browsers, Discord overlays, and recording software before launching, since each one consumes CPU and RAM that Fortnite needs. Make sure your graphics drivers are current, enable Windows Game Mode, and set Fortnite's power plan to high performance. If your PC has 8GB of RAM or less, closing background apps is not optional; it is the difference between playable and stuttering.

If you have done all of the above and still sit below 60 FPS, the most cost-effective upgrade is usually an SSD if you are still on a hard drive, followed by a second stick of RAM to enable dual-channel memory. A graphics card upgrade only makes sense after those two, and at that point a used mid-range card offers the best value for Fortnite specifically.

Once the in-game settings are right, turn to Windows itself. Update your graphics driver through the manufacturer's own software rather than through Windows Update alone, because game-ready drivers often include Fortnite-specific optimisations. Enable hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling in Windows display settings if your hardware supports it, and set Fortnite to high performance in the Windows graphics settings so a laptop does not throttle it to save battery. Turn off Windows transparency effects and background apps you do not need, and restart your PC before a long session so no update or scan starts halfway through a match.

A frame rate that jumps between 120 and 50 feels worse than a steady 60, because the stutter breaks your aim. If your frame rate swings wildly, cap it at a level your PC can hold consistently, even if that means capping at 60 or 90. Turn on the in-game frame rate display for a few matches and watch where drops happen: drops in busy towns point to CPU or memory limits, while drops during heavy effects point to the graphics card. Stable frame pacing matters more than a peak number on the loading screen, and a cap also reduces heat, fan noise and power use.

It is tempting to change ten settings at once, but then you never learn which one helped. Change one setting, play two or three matches, and write down the average frame rate and how the game felt. Keep a simple note on your phone with each change and its result, and roll back anything that made no difference or made things worse. This method also protects you from placebo: a setting that sounds impressive but changes nothing can be safely left off. After a week of small tests you will have a personal setup tuned to your exact PC, which beats copying a stranger's settings wholesale.

Performance Mode plus low shadows and effects is the core of low-end Fortnite optimisation. Add driver updates and a clean background, and most modest PCs can hold a stable 60 FPS or better.
