Every FPS player has lived the same frustration: your game sense is fine, your positioning is fine, but your crosshair keeps arriving a fraction of a second late. Better aim is not about copying a pro player's exact numbers. It is about settings matched to your hands, gear that removes friction, and deliberate practice that builds real muscle memory. Here is how to approach each piece.

Start with effective sensitivity, or eDPI: your mouse DPI multiplied by your in-game sensitivity. For tactical shooters like Counter-Strike 2 and Valorant, most strong players land between 200 and 400 eDPI. Lower sensitivity generally means better precision, because small hand movements translate into small, controllable crosshair movements.

Common starting ranges work well as baselines. Valorant players often use 800 to 1600 DPI with 0.3 to 0.7 in-game sensitivity, Call of Duty players run 800 to 2000 DPI with 4 to 8 sensitivity, and Counter-Strike 2 players favor 400 to 1600 DPI with 1 to 3 sensitivity. Test in a training mode or bot match: if you consistently overshoot targets, lower it slightly; if you cannot reach targets fast enough, raise it in small steps.

The single most important setting is one you should turn off: mouse acceleration. Acceleration changes pointer speed based on how fast you move, which destroys consistency. Disable it in both Windows and your game, and enable raw input in-game so the engine reads your sensor directly.

Set your polling rate to 1000Hz, the competitive standard, and pick one DPI, 800 is a fine default, then keep it identical across every game, adjusting only in-game sensitivity per title. Use a large mousepad, at least 400 by 300 millimeters, so low-sensitivity arm aiming has room to breathe. A lightweight mouse in the 60 to 80 gram range reduces wrist fatigue during long sessions.

Your monitor matters more than most players expect. A high-refresh-rate display of 144Hz or higher reduces perceived input lag and smooths motion, making enemy tracking noticeably easier. Pair it with enough frame rate to feed it: lower your graphics settings to prioritize frames over visual flair, aiming for at least 144 FPS to match the display.

Consistency extends to your environment. Sit at the same distance, keep your mousepad position fixed, and avoid changing anything mid-session. Aim is a physical skill, and physical skills are built on repeatable conditions.

Raw hours help, but structured practice helps faster. Spend 15 to 20 minutes in an aim trainer like Aim Lab or Kovaak's before you queue, rotating through tracking, flicking, and recoil-control scenarios. Focus on smooth, controlled movements first: slow is smooth, and smooth becomes fast.

Then comes the hard rule: once you find settings that feel right, do not touch them for at least two weeks. Every change resets the muscle memory you are building. Record a few sessions if you can and look for patterns. Consistent over-aiming or shaky tracking tells you what to drill, not what to buy.

Aim principles apply on controller too. Start with sensitivity in the 5 to 8 range, set the right-stick deadzone as low as possible without stick drift, most competitive players land at 3 to 5 percent, and choose a Linear response curve for a true one-to-one stick-to-aim feel. Call of Duty professionals commonly pair these with a 0.9 ADS multiplier.

Hardware helps here as well. Controllers with Hall effect sticks eliminate drift at the source, hair-trigger stops shorten pull distance for faster semi-auto fire, and mapping jump or slide to a back paddle keeps your thumb on the aim stick during movement. The same rule applies: give every change two weeks before judging it.

No setting or peripheral replaces repetition. The players with the best aim are usually the ones who stopped tinkering and started drilling: same DPI, same sensitivity, same setup, day after day. Fix your fundamentals once, train them daily, and let consistency do what shortcuts cannot.
